History:-

History of Daman goes back in 8th Century when it was ruled by Chodwa Rajputs till the 13th century. For 200 years after 13th century Daman is ruled by Muslim emperors. But it’s all changed in the starting of the 16th century when Portuguese started ruling this place. They ruled Daman & Diu for almost 450 years meantime all local culture merged with Portuguese culture from food to language. Portuguese rulers built a fortress on the island. In 1961 Daman & Diu gain freedom from Portuguese along with Goa. Goa becomes a State but Daman & Diu received the status of Union territory in 1978.

The city of Daman was earlier known as "Damano"

Legend says that “Daman” and “Diu” were originally the names of two lovers.
